Window AC units are very effective at cooling small homes or individual rooms in properties that don’t have central air. However, these units can be quite heavy, and there’s a chance you might hurt the window during the installation process. We don’t want to see that happen, so we’ve come up with a few simple tips to help you out.
Be Sure to Choose the Right Size
You definitely don’t want to purchase a window AC that isn’t the right size to maximize airflow and improve energy efficiency. Open your window and measure the height and width of the opening. You’ll also need a unit that’s powerful enough for the room, so measure the room’s square footage if you don’t already know it.
Check the Condition of the Window
In order for the window unit to be installed properly, the window itself needs to be in good condition. Take a quick look and make sure that the wood beneath the window and the window itself isn’t damaged in some way. If you find any damage, it’s best to get it fixed prior to installing the AC unit.
Don’t Lift the Window AC Unit Yourself
No matter how strong you are, you should never try to lift an AC unit on your own. After all, they’re quite big and bulky, and you could easily hurt yourself or damage the window. You don’t need to hire an HVAC technician for this kind of job, but you’ll want to call in a favor from a friend or get someone in your household to help you out.
Lower the Unit Gently
If you lower the unit too forcefully, you might damage the window. Be sure that you lower it into the window frame as slowly and as gently as you can. If you need to ask a third person in your household to help with this part of the process, don’t hesitate to do so.
