Are you keeping up with news on the federally mandated R-22 refrigerant phaseout? Supplies of new R-22 are gradually being reduced each year, as part of the U.S.’s effort to combat ozone depletion. This is leading up to complete halt of production in 2020. This means costs of recharging R-22-using air conditioners and heat pumps will continue to rise. Here’s a look at what this could mean for you and your cooling system.
Who is affected by the R-22 phaseout?
Homeowners with air conditioners that were manufactured or installed before 2010 may be seriously impacted by the R-22 phaseout. This is because 2010 marked the first year in which the production of R-22-reliant air conditioning systems was no longer permitted by the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). R-22 may still be utilized by HVAC technicians for A/C repairs and maintenance, but each year the amount of new R-22 that’s available for this purpose will get smaller and smaller. While the more environmentally benign replacement refrigerant, R-410A, is used in newer A/Cs and heat pumps, it can’t be used in the older models.
How could the shortage affect me?
With the production of R-22 being significantly scaled back each year, there is a good chance that the demand for refrigerant may begin to exceed the supply that is actually available. Ultimately, this would lead to dramatic spikes in the costs of refrigerant-related repairs and maintenance. If your older air conditioner develops a refrigerant leak, or if your refrigerant is found to be under-charged during an annual A/C tuneup, for example, you could end up with a very pricey bill.
How could an A/C upgrade help me?
In order to avoid stressful and expensive situations like these, more and more Dayton-area residents are facing a decision of whether to replace their air conditioners now. For the savvy homeowner, this may be the best course of action. By investing in a new cooling system that uses R-410A, you can prevent R-22-related problems, help the environment, and even lower your utility bills. This is because today’s A/Cs and heat pumps are more energy efficient than ever before.
