Fans, fans, fans — there sure are a lot of new models on the market these days. Take your pick from a floor fan, a pedestal fan, a ceiling fan, or a tower fan. They all move air across your skin so that you feel cooler as perspiration evaporates, but they have different designs. Let’s take a look at these different types of fans so you can decide which is the best type to help you cool off this summer.
Floor Fans
Floor fans — obviously — sit on the floor. They may have a variety of features such as speed and oscillating controls, but they all have a base for support and perhaps even a handle to easily carry them from room to room. Some are tall so that the air can be directed across the room.
Ceiling Fans
A ceiling fan is suspended from the ceiling. They may cost more than table fans or floor fans, and they must be installed by being wired into your home’s electrical system. These fans may just go in one direction, or they might be capable of going both clockwise and counterclockwise. The counterclockwise motion of the blades is for pushing air conditioning to the walls, where it will slide down and cool off the home’s occupants. In winter, the blades should be reversed to spin in a clockwise direction so they can help push down heated air and lift cold air to the ceiling. These fans will not alter temperature, but they will make the room’s occupants feel cooler.
Pedestal Fans
Pedestal fans have height-adjustable stands. Their main use is to direct air above ground or at a certain spot in the room — say, across the surface of a bed. They run the gamut in price from very inexpensive to very pricey. The blades on pedestal fans are often more powerful than the blades on other types of fans.
Tower Fans
These are a good choice if you have kids or pets, as they are either bladeless or have concealed blades. They provide a gentle, easy breeze. Some have built-in thermostats or air-purifying abilities.
