Most HVAC systems send a uniform amount of heating or cooling to each area of the home. The trouble with this is that climate requirements can differ from room to room. A zoning system helps solve this issue. Here is how these systems work.
Airflow Management
In a zoning system, heated or cooled air is allocated according to the customized needs of each zone. Most systems allow three to four zones.
To control airflow, zoning systems implement dampers that follow the direction of programmable thermostats within each region. When a particular zone’s thermostat gives the cue that more climate control is needed, the dampers in the ductwork leading to that zone will open. Other zones that do not need additional blast of heating or cooling at that time won’t receive any.
Customized Comfort
Rooms of the home might be naturally warmer or cooler due to how many windows they have, which floor they occupy, ceiling height, number of appliances or the number of people or animals occupying the space. Zoning systems allow you to designate zones based on these important factors.
For example, zone one could be the lowest level, zone two could be the bedroom region and zone three could be assigned to the kitchen and living area. Tailoring heating and cooling to these areas keeps the whole home more comfortable. It helps you avoid scenarios such as an overly hot kitchen or an overly cool lower level in summer.
Energy Savings
Zoning systems add energy-efficiency to your home by sending conditioned air only where it needs to go. You won’t be wasting energy chilling a room that doesn’t need it while you are sweating upstairs.
In addition, zoning systems use programmable thermostats. You can program different temperature savings for different times of the day to save even more. When no one is using a particular zone at certain times of the day, you can program it to reduce the heating or cooling directed there during that time.
