If you’re thinking about putting in a furnace by yourself, please think again. Furnace installations are definitely a job for the experts. Not only are do-it-yourself furnace installations dangerous, they also require tools and skill sets most homeowners don’t possess. Without purchasing your furnace from a licensed contractor, homeowners can miss out on owning the highest quality furnaces on the market.
Consider the following reasons why you should hire a licensed HVAC contractor to install your new furnace before you attempt the job yourself.
- Safety. Fuel-burning furnaces produce carbon monoxide (CO), which is a potentially lethal gas. One small error in your furnace installation and/or function and the air quality in your home may be compromised. If the CO leak goes undetected, your health and the health of your family is at risk.
- Tools and skills. Putting in a furnace is a complicated and multi-step process that requires specific tools and skills. For example, you will need a set of refrigeration gauges and a two-stage vacuum pump. These tools aren’t a normal household acquisition and aren’t worth the expense for a single furnace installation. What’s your plan if your ductwork needs to be modified? Are you an experienced sheet metal worker with a thorough grasp of s-hooks, drives and custom-offset ductwork? Our licensed technicians are specially trained and spend significant hours in the field before they install furnaces on their own.
- Energy efficiency. Heating equipment manufacturers work hard to produce top quality furnaces that meet high energy-efficiency standards. In order to make sure the units are installed correctly, and to maximize their efficiency, most manufacturers only sell units to licensed HVAC contractors or factory-trained craftsmen. Opting to install a furnace on your own may mean having to purchase second-rate equipment, with a second-rate warranty. Plus, a do-it-yourself installation may void the warranty anyway.
