Maintaining a comfortable balanced humidity level in your home is essential for your overall health as well as preventing problems with your home itself. Too much humidity, (moisture in the air), can lead to water damage and wood rot, as well as bacteria growth, mold growth and mildew, with the associated health issues. If the air in your home is too dry, the wood in your home, including musical instruments and furniture, can become dry and crack.
Achieving balanced humidity in your home can be as simple as opening a window or turning on the heat. Following are some other ways to balance out the humidity in your Dayton area home, making it comfortable all year round.
High Humidity/Excess Moisture
Which method you use to remove excess moisture from a room or the entire house, depends on which room, the severity of the problem and time of year. For example, if you have excess moisture in a bathroom, you can simply open a window or turn on the ceiling exhaust fan to remove steam from the shower and any other moist air. During colder months, heating the basement can eliminate the damp feeling, though you’ll need separate temperature control so you don’t overheat the upstairs. During the warmer months where turning on the heat is not an option, a dehumidifier is effective at removing excess moisture from the air. However, if you have a newer, high-efficiency air conditioner or heat pump, it may adequately dehumidify your home’s air without resorting to a dedicated dehumidifier.
Dry Air
This problem usually occurs during the colder months. Heating your home can often make the air feel really dry, and moisture in the air is a welcomed relief. A humidifier will add moisture to the air and balance out moisture levels.
With both humidifiers and dehumidifiers, you have the option of using portable or room devices if your moisture/dryness issues are limited to one room or small area.
