If you’re interested in cleaning the air in your home, you may be considering a dedicated air cleaner. This is a comprehensive way of purifying indoor air, but you still have to decide which system will work best in your home. You’ll want to choose one that will effectively remove allergens and other contaminants from your indoor air, working with an effective whole-house ventilation strategy. After all, the airtightness of modern weatherized homes is the main reason their air gets so stale and dirty.
Options for Cleaner Indoor Air
- One cost-effective whole-house option for your home is a recessed electrostatic air cleaner. It looks like a register vent and is most often secured in a return air box installed inconspicuously in a ceiling or wall. It’s not connected directly to your cooling and heating equipment, which simplifies installation.Air is sucked into the return vent where the air cleaner traps airborne particles and gases. It does this with a polarization process and activated carbon filter. Maintenance is a cinch, with air filter replacement every one or two months.
- Other options include air cleaners that are connected to the HVAC equipment, between the air handler or blower and the return ductwork, near where the air filter is usually located. Some of these systems also use electrostatic attraction to trap particulates in indoor air. Often they combine electrostatic attraction with high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration.
- Standalone air purifiers that employ a HEPA filter and other technology are also effective, especially when treating the air in a smaller area.
- Other air cleaning options that use different technologies and may target different types of interior pollution include gas-phase filtration, hybrid filters, ozone generators and ultraviolet (UV) light treatment.
