If you have a central air conditioner, you know the normal sounds that it makes: the low but steady fan and compressor sound in the outside unit and the regular fan circulation noise inside. When kicking into a new cycle, it may make a brief clicking noise and then a moderately loud start-up thump before sliding into normal operation. If you hear any other air conditioner sounds, it’s probably a sign that something is amiss. You may be able to troubleshoot the issue, but more than likely a trusted A/C technician should be called.
Screeching or Squealing
This loud, ear-splitting noise can’t be mistaken for anything but trouble. It usually indicates problems with a motor belt or bearing. It might be an easy fix—simply replacing the belt and/or lubricating the motor—or it might be something more serious. Either way, turn off the A/C and call a certified HVAC technician.
Banging, Thumping or Clanking
These noises also may stem from a problem with the blower motor. If you hear a banging or rattling, a part probably has become loose or unsecured and is moving around inside the system. Or the motor mounts on the blower assembly have become loose.
A “Slifting” or “Thwapping” Noise
This means something might be stuck in the blower fan blades. This isn’t necessarily serious, though over the long term, anything that creates resistance in fan operation can wear out the machinery prematurely.
Clicking Noises
Clicking can occur when HVAC equipment kicks on and off. If the noise is coming from the outside compressor or a relay panel any other time, it could signal a defective relay. You’ll need a technician to look at this.
Rattling in the Compressor.
As is the case with the inside blower assembly, this probably means a part has become loose in the compressor, or it could even mean the motor is failing. Turn off the system and seek professional help so further damage doesn’t occur.
