Your home’s ventilation is directly connected to your indoor air quality. Air circulation helps bring fresh air into your home while removing indoor air pollution. As part of your HVAC system, your vents and duct work also help bring conditioned air to all the areas of your home. Not all ventilation systems are ideal for all climates, though, so you should find one that fits both your home and your comfort needs.
A supply system forces fresh air into your home. This type of system gives you control over the amount and quality of air that comes inside and works well in Ohio’s hot summers and its mild spring and fall weather. If you go with a supply system, you may have to watch for condensation problems on exterior surfaces during the winter.
An exhaust system forces air out of your home. This process helps to exhaust indoor air pollution, which would otherwise accumulate inside. These are more suitable for colder climates; in hot or mild conditions, they can cause issues with condensation.
Balanced ventilation is another option that utilizes both supply and exhaust strategies to force out stale air while bringing in fresh air. This type of system is good for all climates, but it also requires more duct work and fans, which makes this system more expensive to install and maintain. A special type of balanced system, called an energy-recovery system, will also help your furnace and air conditioning run more efficiently by recycling some of the cold or warmth in the air that would otherwise be exhausted. Energy-recovery systems are more expensive to install, but may save you money in the cost of running your air conditioning during the hot summer months.
