When the hot summer weather surrenders to colder temperatures, you’ll need to take several steps to prepare your home for the winter chill. One important step is winterizing your HVAC system. This goes a long way toward increasing your system’s longevity. Follow these simple tips below to winterize your system:
1. Disconnect the A/C Unit
Remove your central air conditioning unit from the power grid by turning off the breaker. That protects the unit from damage during the winter and ensures it doesn’t accidentally switch on.
2. Clean the Unit and Surrounding Area
After you’ve turned off the power supply to your system, take the time to clean it properly. Remove the fallen leaves, twigs, and debris around the system. Next, hose off your unit to get rid of the accumulated dust and dirt. Take care not to damage any delicate parts such as the fans. Allow the unit to dry for several hours.
3. Cover Your Unit
You can prevent debris and moisture from getting into your unit by placing a waterproof HVAC cover over it. You can get covers at home improvement stores. Alternatively, you could cover your unit with a tarp and rocks. Make sure the unit is dry before covering it.
4. Seal Off the A/C Vents and Ducts
Air conditioning ducts and vents are significant sources of drafts within your home. Seal them off using approved specialty tape. When spring arrives, ensure you remove the tape before switching on your air conditioner.
5. Replace the Air Filter
A clogged air filter makes your home comfort system work inefficiently, increasing your energy bill. Locate the filter compartment inside your home and change the air filter. You should replace your filter every three to four months.
Taking the above winterization steps ensures your system remains in excellent condition throughout the winter. For more tips on winterizing your HVAC system in the Dayton area, please contact us at Ace Hardware Home Services.
