For homeowners looking to add heating and cooling to a new or renovated space, ductless mini-splits can offer the flexibility of zoned heating and cooling, without that added costs to retrofit your home’s ductwork.
Standard zoning systems
With a standard forced-air heating and cooling system, a zoning system will give you control over which areas in your home receive conditioned air and when. However, extending a conventional zoning system can be cost prohibitive, for example, if you’re adding a new space to your home or remodeling a porch into a Florida room.
A unique zoning solution
Installing a ductless mini-split is a uniquely flexible solution for new spaces, because this system operates without using ductwork. The main components of a ductless mini-split include an outdoor unit, the compressor/condenser, and one or more indoor units, the air handlers. The two components are connected by a conduit, which generally houses the power supply, refrigerant and condensate drain.
With as many as four indoor air handlers to connect to the outdoor unit, you can provide heating and cooling to four spaces or zones. You can operate each indoor air handler separately, which is where zoning flexibility comes in. With the ability to turn each air handler on only when you need to heat or cool a space, you can enjoy energy savings, as well as increase comfort dramatically.
In addition, many of the spaces that are conditioned by ductless mini-splits require more or less heating and cooling than other spaces in the same home. For instance, if you add a mini-split to a remodeled room above your garage, it will likely need more heating and cooling than the rest of your home to remain comfortable, compensating for the unconditioned garage below it.
