The Department of Energy recommends 78 degrees as the best temp to set AC at in the summertime. It’s considered the best temp to set AC at for maintaining relatively cool conditions indoors while allowing the AC to work efficiently. That means the unit works without laboring to dehumidify the home while removing the heat. Not only is the AC not being overworked at 78 degrees, but your utility bills are also not going through the roof when you use 78 as your thermostat’s standard summer setting.
But what if you don’t find 78 degrees cool enough? Many people don’t think it’s the best temp to set AC at. That’s when you should look into remedies to make your family feel cooler without necessarily lowering the thermostat.
Here are some things you can do:
- Install ceiling fans. Using ceiling fans to lift up the heat and push cool air down is one of the best ways to feel comfortable without cranking down the thermostat. Using portable fans of any type will also help to stir the breeze. As we perspire, we cool off when a breeze hits our skin and the perspiration evaporates. Fans help with this cooling process.
- Close the blinds. Keeping solar radiation out of your home during the summer will do wonders to keep your home’s interior cooler. Close the blinds or drapes in the morning, particularly on the windows where the sun shines in.
- Install a programmable thermostat. A programmable or digital thermostat allows you to set a temperature schedule so you don’t have to think about it. Set the thermostat for a comfortable temperature during the mornings and evenings when everyone is home and active; set the temperature a few degrees higher at night or during the daytime when everyone is sleeping or away.
- Change your filter. A dirty air filter will make the air conditioner work harder to achieve set thermostat points. Change it regularly.
