With the many different choices in models, sizes and prices, A/C shopping can feel a bit stressful. Unlike buying a small appliance, like a humidifier or microwave, an air conditioner has a big impact on the comfort of your home and your energy costs. In order to upgrade to the best A/C, always consider the following tips.
Choose the correct size
Bigger is not always better regarding an air conditioner. Some homeowners assume that a large air conditioning unit will keep the home colder. This is not always the case, and because large units use more energy with frequent starts and stops, your utility bill will increase. Professional contractors should never simply estimate the size your home needs. Instead, they should use Manual J, a load calculation protocol that’s considered the industry standard. Many factors go into calculating a home’s cooling load, including insulation and airtightness, home size and layout, the number and size of windows, and others. For ductwork compatibility and design, they should employ Manual D.
Choose an energy-efficient model
Energy-efficient air conditioners use less energy while providing more consistent cooling than older models. One of the easiest ways to tell if an A/C system is exceptionally energy efficient is to look for the Energy Star label. Energy Star certified appliances have met strict federal standards for efficiency. Those designated as “most efficient” are the top of the class.
Consider an air conditioners ability to handle humidity
If your home often feels damp or you have problems with mold, you should choose an A/C system with advanced features designed to remove humidity. Lowered indoor humidity will also make the air feel cooler. This means you may save on energy costs because you will not need to run the air conditioner as high.
