Summers in the Dayton area are typically hot and muggy, so it’s important that your air conditioning system be at peak operating efficiency before our weather starts heating up. To ensure that your A/C keeps you comfortably cool this season, review these common air conditioner problems, and if your cooling system is experiencing any of them, have the issues looked at and addressed as soon as possible.
Installation. Improper installation of your air conditioner can result in an improper refrigerant charge, drainage problems, inadequate airflow and incorrect system sizing. Refrigerant leaks can harm the environment, while improper refrigerant charging will reduce the efficiency and overall performance of your A/C. Because unqualified service technicians may add the wrong amount of refrigerant, it’s important to always hire NATE-certified, expert HVAC technicians to install and work on your cooling equipment.
Containment. Homeowners often neglect to close windows and exterior doors while their cooling system is running, resulting in moderate to extreme cooling losses. Additionally, spaces that rely on room air conditioners should be isolated from the rest of the home.
Maintenance. Besides changing the air filter regularly, the inside and outside A/C coils should be periodically cleaned as necessary. While you can address some issues, you’ll still want to schedule annual professional maintenance of your A/C, ideally in the spring before it gets hot.
Other common air conditioner problems include blown fuses and tripped circuit breakers, which are typically an easy fix for homeowners. Occasionally, the high-pressure limit switch, located in the access panel in the compressor, may trip on hot days.
Common air conditioner problems that require servicing by a professional HVAC technician include corroded terminals and wires, as well as aging fan controls or a compressor that may need replacing.
