Homeowners don’t need to know everything about their air-conditioning system, but it’s always a good idea to understand how certain AC parts work. To help you get started, let’s take a look at some of the most common AC parts and components that are necessary for an air conditioner to do its job all season long.
Thermostat
Your system’s thermostat is an integral part of the process because it’s what allows the equipment to turn on and off, not to mention that it controls the temperature inside your home. If you haven’t already upgraded to a smart thermostat, you should do so now. These new units are highly advanced, and they will allow you to have better control over your cooling, receiving energy-usage reports and providing Wi-Fi access to make changes.
Air Filter
This is one of the few AC parts that your system doesn’t technically need to keep running. The problem is that the air filter keeps harmful contaminants from re-entering your air, so being without one will cause air-quality issues and problems with the equipment. Your air filter will fill up after one to three months of use, so be sure to check it periodically and either replace or clean it as needed.
Evaporator Coil
Refrigerant (which many refer to by the brand name of Freon) is a cooling liquid that’s necessary for the operation of your AC system. This refrigerant moves from your system’s outdoor condenser into the evaporator coil, which cools the refrigerant so that it can absorb any heat or humidity that’s moving through your HVAC equipment.
Blower
Without your AC system’s blower, treated air wouldn’t go anywhere. Once the air has been cooled by the evaporator coil, the blower motor — which is always rotating — pushes the air into the ducts. From there, cold air is moved out and distributed into each room of your home.
