Are you planning on buying a heat pump in 2013? Most homeowners don’t have the knowledge necessary to select a heat pump, and require the assistance of a reputable HVAC contractor to navigate the process. That’s the first step when buying a heat pump. The other two steps involve selecting the right efficiency ratings and correctly sizing the system.
Choosing a contractor
A reputable HVAC contractor should have the expertise and training to help homeowners assess their needs, and follow the necessary steps required to properly install the unit. In fact, experts estimate that a surprising number of homeowners have heating and cooling systems that have been incorrectly installed, which results in higher energy costs, shorter system life span, and perhaps increased repairs.
Selecting efficiency ratings
Your contractor will work with you to choose the appropriate type of system to suit your needs and your budget. You’ll review Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) ratings, or cooling efficiency, which begin at minimum SEER 13. The Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) outlines the unit’s ability to heat your home, and begin at HSPF 7.7 With both ratings, higher efficiency means lower energy costs, but the unit will cost more upfront, too.
Sizing the unit
Before installing the new system, the last step when buying a heat pump involves sizing the unit. Every home has unique heating and cooling loads, based on multiple factors including the home’s orientation, insulation levels, airtightness and more. Your contractor should use the Manual J method for calculating heating and cooling load. With that information in hand, he can then correctly choose the right-sized heat pump to meet the loads.
