Are you willing to think outside the box when it comes to air conditioning? Most homeowners think their choices are limited to conventional split or packaged air conditioners with a compressor and an air handler. Some might have one foot outside the box and use a heat pump for both heating and cooling needs. The new kid on the block is the ductless mini-split; however, these are not as new as you might think.
Mini-splits have actually been around a while but are growing in popularity for residential homeowner use due to their comfort and flexible installation options.
Installation
Mini-split systems are often the air conditioner of choice among homeowners who 1) add on to their homes and need that spaced cooled, or 2) decide to add air conditioning to an existing space, like a newly-enclosed Florida room or porch. Ductless mini-splits work so well because you don’t have to add on to existing ductwork; they work without ducts.
These systems have an outdoor compressor unit and the option of one to four units indoors that act as the air handler. All that’s required is to drill a hole in the wall no bigger than 3 inches to connect the indoor and outdoor units and then connect to electricity. The indoor unit itself is smaller than a room air conditioner, and can be installed on the wall or a ceiling.
Comfort
Installing mini-splits doesn’t mean you sacrifice comfort. You can set the desired temperature in the room to your liking, and it doesn’t interfere with the rest of the home’s cooling needs. Having multiple indoor units connected to one outdoor unit is like having a zoning system: you choose when to turn one of the indoor units on when you need it. The space is comfortably cooled and you save money by cooling the rooms only when necessary.
