Now that we’re well into the fall season in southwest Ohio, you’ll be thinking more about heating your home. If you’re planning a room addition, or want to transition to a ductless system, you’ll likely consider ductless mini splits for home heating (and cooling in the summer)
What are ductless mini splits?
These systems are modified heat pumps but instead of two main components – an outdoor compressor/condenser and an indoor evaporator/air handler, ductless mini splits can have up to four discrete inside air handlers served by the one outside unit. Moreover, they provide heating and cooling without a duct system, and allow for zoned heating and cooling. This maximizes efficiency and convenience.
The benefits of ductless mini splits
- Quick and simple installation – The indoor and outdoor components of the mini split can each be installed rather easily and in an aesthetically pleasing fashion. The connection between the two units – a conduit with the power source, refrigerant line and other services – only requires a 3- to 4-inch hole in the wall or ceiling.
- Zoning effect – Since multiple interior units can be hooked up to a single compressor, you can create a zoning system, allowing you to only heat or cool the areas of your home that really need it. Occupants in a particular zone or room can control the temperatures with their own thermostat.
- Energy-efficiency – Ducts are notorious energy wasters. Since ductless mini splits don’t have ducts, this wasteful loss of energy will not occur.
- Added security – An often unspoken negative of window A/C units is the fact that burglars can use the gap they create to enter your home. Since the mini split conduit runs through a small opening, similar to electrical or plumbing lines, you won’t have that problem.
