Maintaining a consistent temperature around your home can be challenging. Sunny rooms located on your home’s upper level are often too warm, while north-facing rooms on the ground floor can remain chilly.
If you’re customizing the airflow in your home, adjusting the louvers on the supply registers in each room is the simplest solution. The dampers in your ductwork can also be adjusted, but it’s typically a chore best left to a professional. If you have attic ducts, read on to see how a technician can make adjustments to control airflow.
- Prepare for the task: First, the technician will fully open all supply registers. Then, he’ll explore your attic to determine how much lighting is available and whether he needs a flashlight or headlamp for the project.
- Find the dampers: The technician will then follow the main duct from the furnace until he reaches the damper, usually located where the main duct branches off to different rooms. The damper is controlled by a small level or rod, which the technician can adjust with a screwdriver and set to a full open position.
- Measure airflow: Next, the technician will turn on your furnace and measure the airflow to each register to determine how well air is currently circulating.
- Adjust the dampers: Afterwards, the technician will go back into the attic and adjust pertinent dampers to optimize airflow in different parts of your home. Your contractor will save you time and money by marking which room each damper serves.
- Adjust supply registers: Back in your home, the technician will close some registers partway to fine-tune the temperature in each room based on sun exposure, preferences, heat loss and gain. It may require some trial and error, but your technician can get the airflow just right.
You may want to have the airflow in your attic ducts adjusted differently during the summer and winter. An effortless option is to install a zoning system, which motorizes dampers and lets you control the temperature in various rooms with multiple thermostats.
