It’s almost impossible to eliminate dust mites completely from your home, but you can certainly reduce their population. Dust mites can produce up to 200 times their body weight in waste during their lifetime. This waste may cause health issues, such as allergic reactions, nasal congestion, coughing and breathing difficulties. By following these steps to eliminate dust mites in your home, you’ll be able to breathe easier in no time.
Wash Bedding Regularly
Washing your bedding in hot water can help kill dust mites. If you clean your sheets once a week, you can significantly diminish their population. If your bedding isn’t washable, freeze it overnight to kill off the mites. Then, hang your bedding outside to dry whenever possible.
Use an Air Purifier
You can run an air purifier to help eliminate dust mites and their waste from your bedroom and other living spaces. Clean rooms are vital for effective mite control, and air purifiers can help reduce allergens and other irritants from the air.
Reduce/Remove Carpeting
Wall-to-wall carpeting can be a breeding ground for dust mites, so when you eliminate your carpet, you’re also eliminating dust mites. Opt for bare floors as much as possible and use washable throw rugs to add warmth and sound dampening to a room.
Steam Cleaning
If you can’t eliminate your home’s carpeting, then steam clean it to get rid of dust mites. You can also steam clean your mattress, furniture, curtains and other furnishings that can’t go in the washing machine.
Control Humidity
While dust mites thrive in the same temperatures as humans, they’re more sensitive to humidity. Keep your home’s relative humidity at 50 percent or less to slow their reproductive rate.
Use a Mattress Cover
The battle to eliminate dust mites from your bedroom is always ongoing because humans are always shedding skin cells. However, you can remedy this problem by putting your mattress in an anti-allergy cover that keeps shed skin cells away from mites.
