Your heating and cooling heat-pump equipment represents a significant investment on your part. When it’s having problems, it’s best to leave diagnosis and repair to the professionals. After all, you want to keep your heating equipment in top working order. There are, however, a few things any homeowner can do to troubleshoot problems.
Here are a few actions you take before you call in the professionals:
- If the heat pump isn’t turning on at all, and you don’t feel any hot or cold air coming from vents or you don’t hear the air handler, do a run-through of its basic controls. You can reset the unit first. Then, check the fuse box and see if any breakers have been tripped.
- If the heat pump does cycle on but it turns back off before reaching the temperature set on the thermostat, check the air filter. A dirty or clogged air filter can lead to operational problems within the heat-pump system itself. There could also be a problem with the blower.
- If you have ice gathering on the system’s outdoor compressor unit, you don’t want to mess with it. Call a professional HVAC technician.
It makes sense that, as a homeowner, you want to take action to avoid problems or repairs with the heat pump. The best way to avoid problems is to give your heat-pump system regular preventive maintenance. Every year, have a contractor come out and check the heating and cooling cycles. The technician will inspect and clean the air handler, blower motor, compressor, coils and controls, and replace parts if necessary.
Mechanical systems do fail, even with regular maintenance. If you’re giving your heat pump regular maintenance and you still have a problem, troubleshoot first by using the steps above, and then call a reputable contractor.
