Making the decision to replace your HVAC system isn’t always straightforward, and it’s definitely not one to make lightly. There are several signs that may indicate it’s time to move ahead with a replacement rather than continuing to pay high energy bills and repair costs.
- Noise. All forced-air HVAC systems make some noise as they run, but if you start to hear an unusual sound coming from the blower compartment or the outdoor condenser, this may indicate a mechanical problem.
- Age. As HVAC equipment ages, it loses efficiency, especially if you or a previous homeowner haven’t followed a regular maintenance schedule. Any system over 10 years old uses more energy than a new unit, so sometimes it makes financial sense to replace your HVAC system. Lower monthly energy bills can help offset the cost of a new system.
- Frequent repairs. If the frequency and cost of repairs are putting a strain on your budget, it may be time for an A/C replacement. Problems associated with your heat exchanger or compressor are costly to fix and may not be worth it. In contrast, new equipment may carry a warranty that can cover both parts and labor.
- You’re selling your home. Energy efficiency tops the list of features most home buyers look for when house hunting. Since heating and cooling account for the largest share of energy costs, a new HVAC system can be a strong selling point, especially if the warranty is transferable.
- Adding livable space. Sometimes it makes sense to extend existing ductwork, so you only have to use one HVAC system for a new space. Before you get too far into the planning process, it’s a good idea to have your HVAC professional assess your system to see if it has the capacity to condition the extra space. If it’s an older system, it may make financial sense to install a new system that fits your home better.
