There has never been a better time to upgrade your air conditioner. The summer is coming to an end so A/C units are no longer priced at a premium, new models are much more environmentally-conscious, and federal tax credits for energy efficiency make those same units economically friendly as well.
Split air conditioning systems have an outdoor metal cabinet that holds the compressor and condenser and an internal metal cabinet that holds the evaporator coil and an air handler. To qualify for a tax credit, these units must have an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of at least 13 and a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of at least 16.
The Benefits of Selecting an Approved Model
Energy Star approved air conditioners can earn you hundreds of dollars in tax credits for energy efficiency if purchased before the tax credits expire Dec. 31, 2011.
Secondly, your energy bills will decrease with a more efficient unit. It’s not only the energy rating but the size of the model and the types of ductwork that need to fit your home. Get these things right and your air conditioner may consume up to 50 percent less energy than your old model.
Other Tax Credit-Eligible Products
Heat pumps, furnaces and boilers can also earn you tax credits for energy efficiency. Additionally, there are tax credit eligible upgrades for other parts of your house including insulation, water heaters and lighting.
