It’s vital that the air we breathe within our own homes be as clean as possible. Reducing the amount of dust in the air can mean significantly improving indoor air quality. Let’s look at seven ways to cut down on dust in your home.
1. Keep It Simple – Minimize the dust by minimizing the clutter. Keep surfaces clear of items that only serve to catch dust and increase the time it takes you to clean properly.
2. Clean Smart – Systematically work your way around a room when cleaning and always clean the higher surfaces first, so that any dust you stir up can settle below.
3. Wash Your Bedding – A large percentage of the dust in your home is comprised of dead skins cells. Many of these are shed while we sleep, and they collect on the sheets, only to be made airborne each time we lay down or toss and turn. Keeping the sheets clean keeps the dust down.
4. Ditch The Carpet – Improving indoor air quality will be easier if you trade your carpeting for tile or hardwood. Carpet holds an enormous amount of dirt and debris, and each footprint stirs it up and into the air.
5. Change Your Furnace Filter – Your furnace filter traps much of the dust and debris that floats in the air so it’s important to change it often, as well as buying quality filters (with a MERV rating of at least 8).
6. Don’t Forget Your Furniture – Vacuum sofa and chair cushions regularly to pick up the dust, dirt and fibers that collect there.
7. Store Seasonal Clothing – Next to dead skin cells, clothing fibers are the greatest source of dust in your home. When not in use, pack away or cover unneeded clothing to prevent dust and improve your indoor air quality.
