If you have a room in your home that’s just not cool enough, you have probably considered several remedies. Maybe you’ve looked into zoned air conditioning or checked to see if the ductwork to that room might need repairs. It could be that your AC was not designed to deliver the proper amount of cooled air to your home, but short of redesigning your home’s ductwork, you may be stuck with the hot room and will need to consider alternative types of cooling. One solution may be individual room AC.
Types of Individual Room AC
There are several types of individual room ACs that might improve cooling in your hot room while avoiding the need for complicated and expensive ductwork redos. Here are four:
1. Window Unit. A basic option for a small room, the window unit is easy to install and relatively inexpensive. However, these units are not particularly energy efficient; they are also noisy and can create a rather distracting blast of uncomfortable, cold air. Also, if not installed properly, they can be somewhat unstable and might fall out.
2. Ductless Mini-Split. These heat pumps can work very well in a small or large space. They don’t require ductwork, as the name implies, and they are relatively easy to install. Consisting of an indoor air handler connected by a conduit to an outdoor compressor, a ductless mini-split is quiet and efficient. While some types are strictly air conditioners, you can also install a model that delivers heat. The main drawback with mini-splits is that they can be rather pricey.
3. Portable Air Conditioner. This type of individual room AC is becoming more popular. While easy to install, they take up quite a bit of floor space and require a vent to the outdoors.
4. Through-Wall Units. While similar to a window unit, these are installed in a hole in an exterior wall. Hire a pro to do the installation to ensure that the unit fits properly.
