An efficient ductwork system is critical to meeting your home’s seasonal temperature control needs. The more efficient your ductwork, the more you’re likely to save on your year-round heating and cooling bills.
Here are some factors to consider when putting together an effective, energy-saving ductwork system:
- Sizing – Sizing means making sure the ducts you use are big enough for the job. The ductwork in your heating or cooling system must be able to carry enough conditioned air to heat or cool your home. The air must also be able to reach the vents and registers at the farthest points of the ductwork system. If ducts are too small, air flow will be restricted and your house will not be properly heated or cooled.
- Design – The design of your ductwork system must be appropriate for the space where it will be installed. Make sure the configuration of the ductwork is adequate to provide conditioned air to all areas of your house. Avoid installing too many “Y” branches in the ductwork system.
- Installation – Avoid installing ductwork in crawl spaces, uninsulated basements or attics, or other unconditioned areas of your home. Ducts are constructed of relatively thin metal, and even well-insulated ductwork will lose some energy through this metal. By running your ductwork system through areas of your home that are already heated or cooled, energy loss will be reduced and your ductwork will be more efficient.
- Sealing – Your home’s ductwork is a major area where energy loss can occur. Ductwork sections, joints and elbows should fit tightly together to avoid creating gaps where conditioned air can seep out. Connections should be sealed with mastic or with metal tape. Despite its name, traditional duct tape should be avoided because it can dry up and fall away, reopening gaps.
