HVAC demand has been steadily increasing. More heating and cooling systems are being purchased and installed than at any other time in history. What’s causing this rise in HVAC demand, and what does it mean for you? Here are a few reasons.
Rise in HVAC Purchases
In 2018, HVAC purchases hit a new record, with the market reaching more than $123 billion in sales. That upward trend is predicted to continue over the next few years, passing $191 billion by 2026. One possible reason for this is climate change.
As temperatures around the globe reach new record highs and record lows, there’s an increased energy demand in order to keep our homes comfortable. At the same time, there’s also increased pressure to lower our energy usage in order to decrease our carbon footprint.
HVAC technology is constantly improving in order to provide better comfort while using less energy. Anyone looking to lower their energy bills — whether to save money, be more environmentally friendly, or both — will do well to purchase a new system that is designed to operate more efficiently.
Rise in HVAC Usage
While in general, HVAC demand is trending upward, this year, the trend was slightly skewed. COVID-19 and the ensuing lockdowns temporarily slowed down system manufacturing. Loss of employment also meant people had less money to purchase these systems, so HVAC demand went down as well.
However, with more people being home all day, HVAC usage increased. Under normal circumstances, families will set their smart thermostats to energy-saving mode during the hours that nobody will be in the house. However, more adults working from home and many kids being schooled at home results in HVAC systems running longer and using more energy.
Of course, this brings us right back to the initial problem of higher energy bills and an increased carbon footprint. So if you do find yourself with an increased HVAC demand, be mindful of your usage and look for ways to use less energy while still keeping yourself comfortable.
