Builders and homeowners seeking LEED certification for their homes can apply several effective types of green home building techniques. Here are some ways you can enhance energy efficiency of your residential construction project:
- Use sustainable and recycles building materials: Use sustainable building materials that are environmentally friendly, such as bamboo or cork. New materials should come from sustainable sources containing recycled glass, wood, plastics and tiles.
- Install a solar power system: Include a solar power system in your structure’s initial design. Solar panels can capture plenty of sunlight and convert it into electrical power. You can also use solar power for water heating, which can reduce or eliminate a major monthly expense.
- Add plenty of insulation: Make sure there’s plenty of insulation in your building’s walls, ceilings and floors. You should insulate your attic and basement thoroughly to keep heat inside your home during the winter and outside during the summer. This can dramatically improve energy efficiency.
- Install high-efficiency HVAC equipment: Invest in high-efficiency HVAC equipment for your new house. High-efficiency furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps can substantially reduce ongoing home comfort costs. Also, consider putting in a geothermal system, which is among the most efficient of available HVAC equipment.
- Include high-efficiency appliances: Many household appliances consume a large amount of energy, so use high-efficiency models when possible. You can look for appliances with high efficiency ratings or certifications from Energy Star.
- Put in water-conserving fixtures: Make sure to install plumbing fixtures that conserve water in the bathroom and kitchen. Low-flow faucets, shower heads and toilets can reduce water use, while still providing plenty of water for essential purposes.
- Install energy-efficient windows: Lastly, install windows designed to be energy efficient. They should already be properly sealed and insulated when installed. Also, look for windows with features, such as low-e glass, double-pane insulated construction and Energy Star certification.
