Your furnace requires filters to operate appropriately. Because the filter in your furnace is designed to catch debris and other materials that can clog and harm your furnace, it is important to replace it regularly.
How Often Should I Replace My Furnace Filter?
The rate at which you replace the filter in your furnace depends on a variety of factors, including the type of filter and how much use it gets. During times of heavy use, inspect the air filter monthly, and change it when it looks dirty. Read the instructions for the filter you choose, however, since it may have a different recommended frequency. Extended media filters, for example, don’t need to be changed nearly as often as basic flat-panel filters.
What Filter Types Are Available?
Just because the air filter in your furnace is a certain type does not mean that it’s the best one for your system. Available furnace types include:
- Disposable fiberglass: These basic air filters are composed of fiberglass and usually cost just a few dollars. While they offer basic protection to system components against dust and debris, they won’t do much to improve indoor air quality.
- Pleated filters: These offer better efficiency when it comes to removing small airborne particles. The folds in the filter medium offer more space to capture particulates, and allow the filter to last longer before replacement.
- Extended media filters: These filters are basically several thin filters pressed together. They offer superior air filtration, but will require special installation since they won’t fit into a standard filter slot in your furnace.
- High-efficiency options. There are a variety of filtration systems that offer near total efficiency when it comes to capturing airborne particulates. Consult with your HVAC technician about your options, and what type of system modifications they might require.
How Do I Change The Filter?
Changing the filter in your furnace is a simple process if you have a standard filter set-up. You can see where the old filter is located and slip it out of the slot where it has been inserted. Then refill the slot with your new filter, which should face the same direction as the one you removed. Filters almost always have an arrow that points in the direction where the filter should be positioned.
