The Dayton area experiences temperature extremes in both summer and winter, with even average daytime temperatures being uncomfortably hot or cold. This means that residents depend on all components of their home cooling and heating systems to function at their peak functionality levels. This includes heating, cooling, and shared components such as ducts and blower motors. This is true with heat pumps as well as A/Cs and furnaces. If you have efficiency or comfort issues and are thinking of replacing your HVAC system, here are five points to consider:
- How old is your HVAC system? The average homeowner should count himself lucky to get a dozen productive years out of it. If you’re lucky enough to make it to 15, the time to consider replacement has arrived. A new, high-efficiency A/C, heat pump or furnace will save you money on your utility bills and provide more reliable and consistent comfort for your home.
- If your HVAC tech informed you during his spring air conditioner tune-up that your A/C is on its last legs as a result of age, inefficiency and/or chronic breakdowns, ask which manufacturer and type of system he recommends.
- If your present system isn’t sized properly for your home, consider hiring an HVAC specialist to perform an energy audit and load calculation. An undersized system will struggle to provide indoor comfort during extreme temperatures, and an oversized system will short-cycle, resulting in wasted energy, unnecessary wear and tear, and inconsistent heating or cooling. Replacing an old system that’s the wrong capacity for your home will reduce energy bills and provide better comfort.
- Consider your payment options and whether any incentives, such as tax credits or rebates, are available for the system you choose.
- Consider the type of system that best fits your home and circumstances. Is a modern, high-efficiency geothermal cooling and heating system worth considering?
