If you are like many homeowners, you look for practical ways around your home to save energy. Be aware that there are many myths out there about saving energy, which could actually be increasing your energy bills. Following are common myths and the real facts.
Myth: Don’t use ceiling fans in the winter.
What many people don’t realize is that you can use ceiling fans during the winter to spread heated airflow more evenly. Just make sure you change the setting so that your ceiling fans pull air up toward the ceiling.
Myth: Turn your thermostat way up or down for fast heating or cooling.
The only thing you have to gain by turning your thermostat way up or down is higher energy bills if you forget about it. The best strategy for maximum comfort and efficiency is using a programmable thermostat.
Myth: Put your freezer chest in an unheated garage.
Temperatures in unheated garages change drastically seasonally. Your freezer’s motor must adjust to drastic temperature swings, which is less efficient than being stored in a basement with a constant temperature.
Myth: Close off vents in unused rooms.
Closing vents or doors to unused rooms disturbs airflow through your home. The best strategy to use for saving energy is with a ductless mini-split or with a zoning system that closes off airflow at the trunk.
Myth: Leave electronics on rather than turning them on and off frequently.
In earlier years of personal computers, printers, and televisions, these products used a lot of energy to power up. That is not the case today — especially with Energy Star-certified products. Shut off your electronics whenever possible to save energy.
Myth: Your fireplace can heat your home efficiently.
Sitting by a crackling fireplace may be a nice, cozy experience, but it isn’t an efficient way to heat your entire home. If you are going to use your fireplace, make sure to close the damper and glass doors after each use to prevent drafts in your home.
