The summer of 2012 has been extremely dry in southwest Ohio, though the dry weather has been interrupted occasionally by strong thunderstorms, including the monster that struck June 29, knocking out power to much of the state. These strong storms bring heavy rain, damaging winds and searing lightning. Here are some severe weather safety tips you and your family can use to be prepared in case powerful storms strike:
- Develop and practice an emergency plan: Discuss storm safety and preparedness with your family and make sure everyone, even the youngest members, know what to do if a storm occurs. Establish safety zones where family members should gather during storms. Devise an evacuation route and determine where to meet after the storm in case your family is separated. Know where to find utility shut-off switches and make sure everyone knows how to operate them.
- Put together a stock of emergency supplies: Maintain a three-day supply of drinkable water (at least one gallon per day for each person) and non-perishable food, such as canned goods or camping foods. Keep a well-stocked first aid kit where you can get to it easily. Keep supplies of flashlights, batteries, blankets, tools, hygiene items, radios, spare clothing, generator fuel and extra cash. Keep extra copies of important documents and maintain a 10-day supply of medications. Make sure all items are kept fresh and easily accessible.
- Prepare your home: Take steps to make sure your home can withstand wind, rain and lightning. Install storm doors and windows. Install surge protectors to prevent damage to electronics and electrical equipment.
- Know what to do during and after storms: Know how to be safe during a storm. If indoors, stay there. Stay away from windows. If outside, look for shelter but avoid bodies of water, high ground, individual tall trees and metal objects. Avoid flooded areas and damaged power lines.
