Particularly if you suffer from allergies or asthma, you need a dedicated system to clean the contaminants from your air. There are a number of air purifiers to choose from. You could pick up an inexpensive, portable one. Or you could invest a little more, and get a whole house system.
Portable Air Purifiers
A portable air purification device is meant to filter a single room. It uses HEPA filters – high efficiency air filters that capture and remove even the smallest particles, such as mildew, cigarette smoke, and even bacteria.
If you live in an apartment, or your home doesn’t have a central air system, then a portable system is worthwhile. They’re very good at cleaning the air across a small space. The drawback is, if you have a larger house, the air in the other rooms will still have allergens and other contaminants in it. They can also be very loud, though manufacturers are working to make quieter ones.
Whole House Air Purifiers
As long as your home has ductwork, a whole-house system is a better air cleaning option. It circulates clean air through your entire home, rather than just a single room. There are several different system types, which clean the air in different ways.
Extended media filters are much thicker than standard fiberglass filters, and can remove more and smaller particles. Electronic filters use an electric current to give the air particles a positive or negative charge. Contaminants are then attracted to the filter, which has an opposite charge, thus removing them from the air. You can also use a UV system, which zaps the air with ultraviolet light, killing any biological contaminants, such as mold or bacteria. These need to be used alongside another filtration method, however, as they don’t get rid of dust, or other inorganic debris.
Whatever type you get, a whole-house air purifier is essential for keeping your home’s air clean, so you can breathe easy in any room.
