Ductless mini-splits can serve as a great complement to your current heating or cooling equipment if you’re faced with comfort issues caused by the limits of your ductwork’s powers, or if you’re planning an addition to your home. Mini-splits are versatile, efficient and easy to incorporate into your home.
Ductless mini-split systems use an outdoor compressor to create conditioned air. This air is then sent through a ductless conduit to one of up to four different indoor air handler units. Without having to rely on ductwork to distribute the air, none of the air leaks out through gaps or holes. This is a major improvement over forced-air systems that rely on ductwork that can lose up to 30 percent of the air before it gets to its destination.
In addition to being highly efficient, they also help you control how much energy you use on a regular basis, similar to zoning systems. Rather than constantly sending air to all parts of your house regardless of whether or not they’re occupied, you can simply shut off the air handler when you leave the room. This helps bring down operating costs.
The installation is a very simple process. You only need a 3-inch hole drilled into the wall of each room where you want an air handler, for the conduit to pass through. The compressor is kept up to 50 feet away from your house so that the noise it makes isn’t bothersome. This also helps you reach spaces on opposite sides of your home with just a single compressor.
Ductless mini-splits are flexible and easy to incorporate within your living space. There are floor-standing models available, or others can be hung from the ceiling or mounted on the wall. They often come with remote controls so that you can position them in places that are difficult to reach. Decorative jackets also help them fit in your home.
