There are all sorts of ways an HVAC system can break down. By taking good care of your unit, you can keep common HVAC repairs to a minimum, but they’re still needed now and then, especially as the system ages. Here are a few of the most common HVAC repairs you might need.
- Leak repair. A refrigerant leak means your system is working at reduced capacity, wasting energy and wearing out the equipment. Call your HVAC technician to recharge your coolant. On the other hand, if there’s water pooling around your unit, it likely means a clog rather than a leak. If the condensate drain gets backed up, excess water will build up in your system. Your HVAC technician can unclog it.
- Thermostat repair or replacement. If your thermostat won’t turn on at all, start by replacing the battery. If that doesn’t work, it may need to be replaced. If you need to crank the thermostat way up or way down to make your home comfortable, it may need to be recalibrated. Your HVAC technician can do this during annual maintenance.
- Coil cleaning. Both your condenser and evaporator coils must be cleaned periodically to maintain your system’s efficiency. Ideally, this is one of the common HVAC repairs that should be done once a year, but if the unit is in an area with a lot of debris, it may need it more often. Your contractor can do this with warm water, some cleaning fluid, and a special brush to remove debris.
- Electrical issues. A bad contactor stops electrical current from flowing through the system, which can cause your condenser, your compressor, or your blower motor to stop functioning. It’s a fairly straightforward repair, but don’t attempt it yourself, as it requires training in electrical work. Your HVAC contractor can handle it.
- Belt replacement. If you hear a squealing noise from your unit, it may mean a loose or faulty belt, which can damage the system over time. Your HVAC contractor can tighten the belt or replace it.
