When it’s cold outside and your furnace isn’t working, your main priority is to get the unit fixed and the heat flowing again.
Here are a few tips that can help you get solve urgent furnace issues and may let you avoid a costly emergency service call:
- Make sure the thermostat is placed on the “heat” setting. A simple error or wrong button pressed on the thermostat can switch off the heating and keep the furnace from working like you expect.
- Check the temperature setting on the thermostat. Make sure it’s set above the indoor temperature indicated on the thermostat. A mistake in settings could accidentally put the temperature too low for your comfort.
- Make sure the furnace’s power is switched on and that the unit is receiving power. Turn on the fan by itself to ensure that the heating system is on and getting power.
- Look at the furnace’s circuit breakers at the main breaker box and ensure they’re set to the “on” position. An unexpected power surge or other glitch could trip the breakers on the furnace and turn it off without your awareness.
- Make certain the SSU switch is in the “on” position. This switch, which provides an additional electrical disconnect option in case of a power surge, looks much like a regular light switch mounted in a box on or very near the furnace.
- Check the furnace filter and make sure it’s not interfering with the furnace’s operation. An extremely dirty filter blocks needed air flow in the furnace. Dirty filters can cause furnace malfunctions and breakdowns. Change or clean the filter if needed.
- Make sure air return vents and registers are not blocked by furniture, boxes, clothing or other obstructions. If your furnace cannot get enough air back into the system, it may simply stop working.
