What They Are
A ductless system doesn’t use any ductwork to deliver the conditioned air. Instead, it blows heated or cooled air directly from an air handler. An outdoor condenser, just like those used with central AC and heat-pump systems, sits outside or hangs from an exterior wall. A flexible conduit that carries the refrigerant line, power, and drain line connects the condenser to the air handler.
Their Benefits
- The most significant benefit of ductless mini-splits is their energy efficiency. Their lack of ductwork makes them inherently more efficient, and many units use upgraded components that contribute even more energy savings.
- They are easy to install. Since they don’t require ductwork, installation is fairly simple. The HVAC pro finds the best place for the components and connects them. Once calibrated, the appliance is ready to go.
- Ductless systems are quiet. Since the condensers are not as large as central systems, they run more quietly.
- Each area conditioned by a mini-split has its own thermostat, which means you can choose a temperature that you prefer without it affecting others in your home. If you’re not using a space, you can adjust the temperature setting accordingly.
Their Downsides
- Mini-splits are more expensive than their wall or window counterparts. They also cost more than central systems with equivalent output.
- The basic air handler makes a visual impact on the wall where it’s located. You can, however, look for ductless units that disguise the air handler and place it discreetly in walls or ceilings.
