Do you have a bonus room in your home? Maybe it’s a room over your garage that you use for a man cave or a section of your basement that functions as a guest room. Whatever you use it for, that area isn’t connected to the rest of your heating and cooling system, making it difficult to get it comfortable. How do you install HVAC to cover your bonus room? You have several options.
Ductwork
The reason air doesn’t reach that area is because it’s not connected to your ductwork. Therefore, the most straightforward solution would be to add extra ducts to connect the room to your system. This will ensure you always have air when you need it.
However, this isn’t always practical. Ductwork can be difficult and expensive to add after your main system has been installed. It may also require you to get a new, larger HVAC system to accommodate the added space without overworking your system.
Window Unit
Depending on how large the room is, you might consider a window unit. Designed to cool a small space, it can provide you with air while you’re using the room, then be turned off when you leave. It helps to add a ceiling fan as well to improve the room’s air circulation and to save energy.
Ductless Mini-Split
If your bonus room covers a larger area, such as your basement, a window unit might not be practical. In that case, you’ll want a ductless mini-split. Great for duplexes, add-ons to your home, or any area not connected to your ductwork, a mini-split attaches to the wall and brings air in directly from outside, heating or cooling it before it reaches your home.
Cheaper and more practical than adding new ductwork in most cases, it can also provide zoning, allowing you to set different temperatures in different areas. If your bonus room sees frequent use, outfitting it with a ductless mini-split is a good investment to keep the area comfortable.
