These are the most important questions to ask when you meet with HVAC professionals for an HVAC system estimate. Since most homeowners don’t go through the replacement process, the process of selection and the estimates often seem bewildering.
- Do I have to pay for the estimate? The simple answer should be no. Free estimates are part of doing business for HVAC contractors.
- Are you licensed, insured and bonded? All answers should be yes. If in doubt, check with the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board. Using an unlicensed contractor can void the warranty and leave you financially unprotected.
- How big should the new system be? The answer to this question shouldn’t be immediate and in the long run, it’s the most important to consider when getting an HVAC system estimate. The contractor should tell you that they need to conduct a load calculation using Manual J software to find the right size for the new equipment. Going by the size of the existing equipment or the square footage alone often results in a system that’s too large or small.
- What about energy efficiency? The cost of your new system depends on its size and energy efficiency. More efficient equipment pays for itself faster in lower energy consumption, which reduces its cost over the lifetime of the equipment. Ask the HVAC representative to run an analysis to find the lifetime costs of the equipment.
- How about the warranty? Besides learning the length for parts and labor, ask what the manufacturer requires to maintain the warranty and whether it’s transferable. Some require proof of maintenance. A transferable warranty may help you sell your home.
- How much will the equipment and its installation cost? Before making your decision, factor in its energy efficiency and warranty, along with available financing and local incentive programs from utilities or government agencies.
