A furnace burner is a key part of your home’s furnace system, and without it, you cannot generate heat. The burner is where your furnace mixes fuel and air, which is then ignited to produce heat. Furnace burners can be run off several different fuel sources, such as propane or oil. However, a gas furnace is the one most homeowners are likely familiar with.
Burner Types
The type of furnace burner your system needs can depend on several different factors, such as the furnace’s design, age, and fuel needs.
- In-shot Burners. These types of burners are commonly found in furnace units that are designed to be high efficiency and which are used in induced draft furnaces. This is considered a modern design and is found in many of the new furnaces sold today.
- Upshot Burners. An older design, these burners are found in natural draft furnaces. They are not nearly as common as they once were due to the low-efficiency levels (roughly 70%) of natural draft furnaces. However, they are still found in many homes to this day, and some have even had newer parts installed to improve efficiency and meet modern performance standards.
- Conversion Burners. A conversion burner is a burner designed to convert fuel types. This can be very useful if you need to modify your existing furnace. For example, you can install a conversion burner on an oil-burning furnace to allow it to run off natural gas.
