Indoor air quality is vitally important to the health of your family because the air in the relatively closed system of your house may be even more polluted than outdoor air. Here in the Miami Valley, many of us rely on home comfort systems to heat or cool our homes all year long, and the air we breathe is circulated through those systems via ducts within the walls.
Toxins, germs and mold can collect in the ductwork of a house from many sources, such as cleaning products and chemicals, pet dander, bacteria, rodent droppings, insects, humid conditions or hidden leaks and more. Because the irritants may re-circulate into the air you breathe, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency suggests that duct cleaning be done if an excessive amount of these substances are found. If family members are experiencing an unusual amount of illness, respiratory symptoms or fatigue, this may be a sign of poor indoor air quality as well.
Ace Hardware Home Services can inspect your duct system, assess its condition or level of contamination and make a recommendation. We recommend duct cleaning every three to four years, and more often if you have pets or allergies. Households that have one of the following will also need duct cleaning sooner than later:
- Recent water damage to the house
- Residents who smoke
- Recent remodeling work
- Mice or insect infestations
If action is needed, ensure that your ductwork is properly cleaned and care is taken to avoid contaminating your home again by hiring a contractor who follows the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) protocol. This industry group is dedicated to maintaining high standards in waste removal and duct system cleaning.
