Is part of your house too cold, while another part is too hot?
You can make every room in your house feel “just right” by installing a zoning system.
Zoning systems allow you to de-centralize your central heating and cooling system. Though different rooms have different heating and cooling needs, central HVAC systems typically treat them all the same. That south-facing sunroom might need less heating (and more air conditioning) than a room along the north wall, but the solitary thermostat in the hallway does not know that. Likewise, an upstairs room will naturally end up warmer than the one below it, because hot air rises. But a traditional HVAC system is always either “on” or “off”; it cannot adjust the temperature in one room without also affecting the rest of the house.
Zoning systems solve this problem by dividing your home’s duct system into multiple separate areas. Though you still just have one furnace or air conditioning unit, the air from that unit can be diverted to the areas of the house that currently need it. That one cold room will receive all of the warm air, for instance, quickly bringing it up to a comfortable temperature without over-heating the rooms that are already warm. So, not only is your house more comfortable throughout, but you actually save money on your heating and cooling bill by eliminating waste.
Since each zone has its own separate thermostat, zoning systems also give you much more control over your home’s air. If you prefer your bedroom to be a different temperature than the kitchen, you simply change the setting on that zone’s thermostat. If you are using programmable thermostats, you can even have the zoning system automatically turn down the heating or air conditioning in bedrooms during the day, or in the living room while you sleep – saving even more energy.
