If you have a hot water tank, you may be losing more energy than you think. A hot-water tank stores heated water so you can have it anytime, but keeping that water constantly heated can use a lot of energy. There’s an alternative — tankless water heaters — that can save energy and money.
A tankless heater heats water on demand, only and whenever when you need it. No more waiting for the water tank to fill up after the whole family has showered.
Tankless heaters come with one possible limitation, however: the flow rate. They can only warm so much water, so it might not be able to heat enough at once for multiple, simultaneous purposes. One simple solution is to install a second tankless heater. You can even have one dedicated to appliances, such as the dishwasher and washing machine, so their use does not interfere with your other needs.
Some factors to weigh when considering a tankless model:
- Size. Consider how you’ll use it — for the whole house or just one application, such as a bathroom.
- Fuel type. Will you power the water heater with electricity, gas or another energy source?
- Energy efficiency. How much hot water does the heater produce compared to how much fuel it uses?
