HVAC installations tend to be large, complex and expensive — not the sort of thing you want to trust to just anyone. Finding a qualified HVAC installer or contractor is too important to play by ear if you want to make sure your HVAC system can take care of your household for years to come. Here are some tips on selecting a qualified HVAC installer.
Finding an HVAC Installer
- Ask your friends and neighbors who they rely on. A simple conversation can often tell you if people have had bad or very good experiences with their contractors. Make sure to ask if their contractor was timely and honest.
- Check with the Better Business Bureau. Not all HVAC contractors are listed with the BBB, but if your company does have a listing, you should check out their rating and any history of complaints.
- Get multiple quotes. Getting quotes from multiple vendors is especially important if you’re installing a new system, as that can help you spot any outliers. If one company is significantly overcharging compared to the competitors, they may be trying to make a quick buck off customers who don’t do their due diligence. If a company is significantly undercharging, they may be cutting costs in places you don’t want them to.
- Check to see if a company is licensed, bonded and insured. This will help to protect you by showing that the contractors are trained and they’re insured in the event something goes wrong. Look for technicians who are NATE certified to make sure they have a wide and solid range of expertise.
- If you have a brand of HVAC equipment that you prefer or that’s already installed in your home, check to see if the company has accredited any contractors in your area.
