A new heat pump system can achieve efficiency rates of 300 to 400 percent heat energy output per electricity consumed with select high-efficiency components. Maximize the performance and efficiency of your new system by choosing an HVAC contractor with proven installation expertise. They will conduct HVAC sizing calculations and help you prepare your home for your new heat pump system.
Home energy evaluation
The efficiency of your home’s envelope influences energy bills, home comfort, and the heating and cooling load placed on your new heat pump system. A home-efficiency upgrade project will deliver years of positive results for comfort and energy savings, and, in the case of adding fiberglass insulation, it will last for the lifetime of your home.
Your HVAC professional should conduct tests (an energy audit) that reveal any deficiencies in insulation, sealing and even the energy usage habits of household occupants. A calibrated blower door test pinpoints tiny air leaks around doors and windows and other parts of your home’s exterior. A thermographic scan of your home reveals areas that need additional insulation. Other recommendations may be made, such as upgrading window coverings, boosting attic ventilation and sealing an attached garage.
Heating and cooling load
Once your home is prepped with proper efficiency upgrades, your HVAC pro will perform a heating and cooling load calculation room by room using the industry standard Manual J from the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA). This calculation is required to accurately size your new heat pump system. A system that is too large wastes energy and undergoes excessive wear with quick-cycling. You also spend more money than necessary for a larger system. A too-small system has the predictable problem of not having the capacity to serve your needs.
Your home’s duct system should be analyzed to ensure that it’s up to speed for the new heat pump. Poor duct design undermines the potential energy savings of a new heat pump, and leads to poor indoor air quality and uneven heating and cooling.
