There’s nothing more worrisome than strange smells emitting from our major appliances. When this happens, most of us assume that we’re in for a breakdown or repair. That’s not always the case, especially when it comes to HVAC smells. Sometimes, these HVAC smells are relatively innocuous. Read on to learn the difference between the various HVAC smells you might experience.
Harmless HVAC Smells
Dampness
A damp odor emitting from your HVAC can be harmless. It might just be that your air conditioner is overwhelmed with the moisture it’s trying to remove from your home. If the damp scent persists after a few hours, change the air filter or check out the condensate drain.
Dust
Sometimes when you start up your HVAC equipment, particularly the furnace, you may smell an acrid, burning odor. This could be dust that has settled on your furnace, which will burn off after the furnace runs for a while. If it persists, have your HVAC tech look into it.
Rotten Smell
This might happen when an animal crawls inside your equipment, ducts, or vents — and then dies. You may need professional help to get it out.
Harmful HVAC Smells
Mildew or Mold
Your HVAC is designed to pull excess humidity from the home’s air and get rid of it. Sometimes, the HVAC gets overwhelmed and can’t properly dehumidify the air, resulting in excess moisture inside the air conditioner and leading to mold or mildew. Two of the major reasons for these HVAC smells are a dirty air filter or a clogged condensate drain.
Rotten Eggs
Natural gas doesn’t have a smell, but the gas company adds a substance so homeowners will know if they have a gas leak. HVAC smells like rotten eggs are a sign of a gas leak. Clear the home and call the gas company and your HVAC tech immediately.
Burning Odor
This HVAC smell could signal trouble with the compressor or the AC fan. Turn the unit off and call your tech.
