Deciding to install programmable thermostats is easy. Since it can save you a decent amount on your energy bills, it is usually the smart way to go. Choosing which programmable thermostat, on the other hand, is usually more difficult.
Choosing the right programmable thermostat for you depends on a number of factors, including compatibility with your current system, the features you want and your schedule.
Compatibility
Before choosing any programmable thermostat, it is important to make sure it will be compatible with your current heating or cooling system. Typically, there are two types of thermostat systems – high and low voltage.
Low-voltage systems are more common, and they will have thinner wires, similar to wires inside a telephone cord. If you would rather not go poking around the wires in your home, call a reputable heating and cooling expert for help.
Features
The next thing you want to consider when looking at different programmable thermostats is the available features on each. Thermostats with more features are usually a little more expensive.
Some of these thermostats come with light-up digital screens and some have touch pad controls. Many programmable thermostats also come with a vacation feature, which allows users to program them during extended trips. More advanced programmable thermostats may also allow you to program it via telephone or voice commands.
Schedule
Another very important thing to consider before choosing a programmable thermostat is your schedule. Many people make the mistake of not checking which days a thermostat of this sort can be programmed.
Some programmable thermostats have a simple scheduling system, allowing a user to program it Monday through Friday at one setting, and Saturday and Sunday at a different setting. If you have an ever-changing schedule, you may need that you can program differently every day of the week.
