Spring is finally here, and for Dayton homeowners looking to support their energy-saving resolutions, it’s worth taking some time to improve a couple things around their home. Whether it means making small home improvements or changing up your routine, these home efficiency tips can help you cut your energy bills down.
- Clean your fans and vents. Using your fans can help keep you cool during the summer, and when reversed, warm you up during the winter. Make sure to keep your fan blades clean to reduce drag, and to keep your vents clear of obstructions, so that conditioned air can circulate through your rooms unimpeded.
- Seal any air leaks. Even if you’ve sealed some air leaks earlier last season, it’s worth going back to check over them again in case the seals have degraded. Letting air escape means you’re letting heating and cooling dollars escape as well.
- Use window treatments and landscaping to control direct sunlight. During the winter, directing sunlight on your windows can help warm your home. When the weather warms up, use curtains, shades, window films and green growth to catch or deflect the warm sunlight.
- Change your HVAC system’s air filter. A clogged filter can obstruct airflow, produce less heating and cooling power and make your HVAC system’s fans work harder. Make sure to change your air filter once a month to keep costs low and comfort high.
- Set your thermostat higher during the cooling season, lower during the heating season and down or off when you leave for the day. To make things easier, consider installing a programmable thermostat that can turn temperatures back when you’re out at work or tucked into bed.
