Traditional thermostats allow you to only manually set the temperature in your home. The furnace or air conditioner will maintain that temperature, but will turn off and on all day or night to do it. Unless you change the setting manually, you have no option to save energy by running the system at a lower level when heating and cooling isn’t needed. You waste money and energy by heating or cooling your house when it’s not really necessary.
Programmable thermostats solve that problem and give you control over other aspects of your home comfort. They allow precise thermostat settings and let you choose when your heating or cooling system operates. Installing a programmable thermostat is a wise move if you want to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of your furnace or air conditioner.
Programmable thermostats have energy-savings set-points. These are pre-programmed temperature levels at which you will see less use of fuel and more savings on your utility bills. The set-points can be adjusted to fit your family’s schedule and needs. Keep the thermostat set at those levels for several hours at a time – at least eight hours, if possible. Use these thermostat settings to run your heating or cooling system at a reduced level when no one is home for an extended period and at night after you and your family have gone to bed. Using a set-point cycle gives you the greatest level of comfort and energy savings.
If you’re planning to be away from home for several days, you can change the programming for that time. This allows you to set your home’s temperature several degrees warmer in summer or cooler in winter during the time you’re away. This saves energy and money by not running your temperature control system at normal levels when you’re not at home to enjoy them. You can also program it to return to a comfortable level an hour or so before you’re due to be home.
