Now that the weather is finally warming up in the Dayton area, now’s the perfect time to get a few chores done around your home. One of the most important tasks to complete right now is preparing your HVAC system for spring, which should include the following tasks:
Checking the Air Filter
The air filter protects your HVAC system from dust, dirt and other debris that could cause premature wear and tear to sensitive system components. As such changing it regularly can keep your system running efficiently and improve your indoor air quality. At least once a month, you should check the condition of your air filter and have it cleaned or replaced as necessary.
Seasonal Maintenance
Every spring, you should have your HVAC contractor inspect your HVAC system and make sure it’s ready for the warmer weather. This visit should include coil cleaning, a leak inspection, a refrigerant charge check, blower fan cleaning and an electrical connection inspection. These steps will ensure your system is running safely and efficiently, while also keeping your system’s warranty in full effect.
Duct Inspection
Have your HVAC contractor inspect your duct system to make sure that all the air ducts are connected tightly and that they’re properly sealed and insulated. In some households, leaky ducts can increase energy usage by up to 40 percent. If your ducts have excessive amounts of dust, dirt, mold or other debris, consider having them cleaned, as well.
Install a Programmable Thermostat
Using a programmable thermostat to adjust the temperature of your home automatically while you’re away or asleep can reduce your heating and cooling costs by up to 20 percent. In the winter, a temperature reduction of 10 to 15 degrees is recommended for the greatest energy savings, and an increase of 10 to 15 is recommended for the summertime.
